Healthy Cooking and Eating

The rate of obesity is high among Americans.  The reason is that many people lead busy lives and are finding that they just do not have the time to cook, and it is just easier for them to eat out because of their time constraint.  Eating fast foods on a regular basis is more costly than buying and preparing regular meals at home.  There are more health benefits to eating a home cooked meal than eating fast food.  For example, when you cook at home, you are better able to control the nutritional content of the food you are eating.

When you grocery shop for good, nutritious foods you want to choose foods that are low in fat, and not processed.  For instance, when you go to buy meat, choose lean meats and poultry.  Try to buy meats that are skinless. If they do have the skin, just remove it before preparing them.  When cooking your food, try to grill or broil your meats instead of frying them.  Doing this keeps the fat content low. 

It is also recommended that you should cut back on foods that are high in cholesterol, such as, eggs, shellfish and liver.  American families are not recognizing how important it is for the family to cook at home.  It is important to create fresh and healthy meals.  The problem is that parents may work long hours and lack the resources they need to prepare nutritious food.  There are many books and magazines that are full of recipes and that can help encourage a parent to cook healthy food and establish good eating habits.

You may want to create a step by step healthy diet plan that you will be able to commit to.  For example, always start out slow.  Make your focus on finding foods that you enjoy and easy recipes you can make from those foods.  You may want to add a salad full of colorful vegetables and use olive oil instead of dressing.  Carbohydrates and fats you will want to eat in moderation.

You do not have to totally restrict yourself from eating carbs and fats, and restricting them will only make you want them more.  When you do decide to eat them, eat them in moderation and in smaller portions.  Healthy eating is more about than just what you put on your plate.  It is also about your attitude toward food.  Healthy eating habits are learned.

Food is to nourish and refuel our bodies.  Chew your food slowly when you eat.  Know when you are really hungry.  Eat smaller meals in throughout the day.  Eat veggies and fruits.

 Also, try to avoid eating at night.  You are not as active during the night as you are in the day.  Eating during the night will cause you to gain weight because you will sleep on what you ate.  If you do choose to have a snack at night, you cannot go wrong with fruits and veggies.  They are the best snack because they are full of vitamins and minerals and most importantly less fat.

Cooking and eating healthy is about a lifestyle change.  It should be a gradual process to a healthier lifestyle and not one that will happen overnight.  Learn how to make better food choices and prepare your foods accordingly to lessen fat consumption.
